Boulder Retaining Wall Built Alongside New Construction in Wappingers Falls

New construction sites come with a lot of moving parts - and one of the most important is managing grade changes before the landscaping even begins. When there's a significant elevation drop running along the side of a building, you need something that can hold that grade permanently. Not just a timber wall or a block wall. Something built to last.

That's exactly what we were working with here. A modern new build needed a heavy-duty retaining wall running along its foundation line to hold back the grade and keep everything stable as the rest of the site gets finished out. We went with large natural boulders, stacked tight and set right into the grade.

The boulders do a few things at once. They hold serious weight, they handle water pressure behind the wall without budging, and they give the whole front of the building a grounded, natural look that ties into the surrounding landscape. That last part matters more than people think - especially on a property with mature trees and natural terrain on all sides.

What we're dealing with at this stage is raw. The site is still active - dirt is fresh, drainage components are still being set, and the building itself is mid-finish. But the wall itself is complete and already doing its job. Getting this step right early is what allows everything else to go smoothly: grading, drainage, final landscaping. It all builds on top of a wall like this.
