Grading

Grading is one of the most important parts of a successful outdoor project. If the ground is not shaped the right way, you can end up with water pooling near the house, soggy lawn areas, erosion, and surfaces that settle over time. At Red Cedar Landscapes, Inc, we use grading to shape the land for proper drainage, stability, and a clean finished look that supports everything built on top of it.

We have been serving the Hudson Valley since 1987, and grading work is a big part of how we help properties function better through every season. Whether you are fixing a drainage problem, preparing for a new lawn, installing a patio, reworking planting beds, or cleaning up a rough site after construction, we take the time to read the land correctly and build a grade that makes sense for the property.

What grading does for your property

Good grading is about more than appearance. It affects how water moves, how stable the soil stays, and how well the finished landscape performs over time. When we grade a property correctly, the goal is to guide runoff away from structures, reduce wet spots, create smoother transitions, and prepare the area for the next phase of work.

  • Helps move water away from your home, garage, barn, patio, or other structures
  • Reduces standing water and muddy areas in the yard
  • Improves the base for sod, seed, planting beds, patios, walkways, and retaining walls
  • Helps control erosion on sloped or uneven ground
  • Creates a cleaner, more finished appearance across the property
  • Supports long-term performance of landscaping and hardscaping

When grading is needed

Many property owners call us because they see water problems. Others need grading as part of a larger landscape or hardscape project. In both cases, shaping the land properly at the start can prevent expensive issues later.

You may need grading if you notice any of the following:

  • Water collecting near the foundation
  • Washout areas after heavy rain
  • Lawn sections that stay soft or swampy
  • Uneven ground that is hard to mow or use
  • Settling around a new build or addition
  • Poor prep before a patio, outdoor kitchen, driveway edge, or garden install
  • Low spots that create ice problems in colder weather

Our grading process

We keep the process straightforward. Most projects start with a call. You can share the problem you are dealing with, the work you want done, and any photos, sketches, or site details that help us understand the area. We review the information, talk through the likely scope, and provide a rough cost range. If needed, we schedule a site visit to inspect the conditions in person.

Once we are on site, we look at slope, drainage patterns, elevations, access, soil conditions, and how the graded area needs to function with the rest of the property. Because grading is often weather dependent, especially in wet soil conditions, we schedule the work when conditions allow for the best result.

From there, our crew uses the right equipment for the job to cut high areas, fill low areas, smooth transitions, and establish the proper pitch. With more than 30 vehicles and machines in our fleet and a 28-person team, we are set up to handle grading work efficiently and with less disruption than a company trying to make do with the wrong equipment.

What grading may include

Every property is different, so the exact scope depends on the site and the goal of the project. Our grading service can include:

  • Rough grading for site layout and elevation correction
  • Finish grading for lawn prep and final surface shaping
  • Regrading around foundations and structures
  • Drainage grading to redirect runoff
  • Prep work for patios, walkways, outdoor kitchens, and retaining walls
  • Soil redistribution and contouring
  • Slope correction and transition work
  • Final smoothing before seed, sod, mulch, or landscape installation

Grading and drainage go hand in hand

One of the main reasons grading matters is drainage. A property can have beautiful landscaping, but if the land pitches the wrong way, water will keep causing problems. We build grading plans with long-term performance in mind. That means looking at how rainwater moves across the site, where runoff should go, and how to avoid pushing problems from one area to another.

In some cases, grading alone can solve the issue. In others, it may need to work together with drainage solutions, excavation, hardscape base prep, or planting work. Because we handle landscaping, hardscaping, excavation and sitework, and drainage-related outdoor work, we can look at the full picture and recommend a practical solution instead of a quick patch.

Built for long-term stability

We do not treat grading like a quick pass with a machine. The way the surface is shaped and compacted matters. Proper grading helps create a stable base for everything that follows. That is especially important for patios, walkways, outdoor living areas, lawn installations, and high-traffic spaces. When the base work is done right, the finished result holds up better and looks better longer.

That focus on long-term performance is a big part of how we operate. We are a family-owned company, and we have built our reputation over more than four decades by showing up prepared, communicating clearly, and doing work we are proud to put our name on.

Residential and larger-property grading

We provide grading for homeowners, estate properties, and commercial sites throughout Hyde Park, the Hudson Valley, and surrounding areas in Columbia County and beyond. Some projects involve repairing a small drainage issue near a back patio. Others involve reshaping larger sections of a property for new landscape construction or site improvement. In either case, the approach is the same: understand the land, use the right equipment, and shape the site so it performs the way it should.

Why property owners choose Red Cedar

Grading is not just about moving dirt. It takes experience to understand water flow, soil behavior, slope control, and how the finish work will tie into the rest of the project. Our clients trust us because we bring a hands-on team, professional equipment, and straightforward communication from start to finish.

Red Cedar took on a job most other companies wouldn't touch — a stone retaining wall with serious drainage issues behind it, plus a drainage system run under the driveway. This wasn't a cosmetic project; it was a real engineering problem, and a few other outfits we talked to either passed on it or clearly didn't have the chops. Red Cedar solved it. The stone wall is solid and beautifully built, the drainage issues behind it and under the driveway are completely resolved, and everything ties together cleanly. Plantings around it were a nice finishing touch. Communication was straightforward, the crew was professional, and they treated the property like it mattered. Five stars — these are the people you call when the job is hard.
