Our Walkways & Paths Process

We make walkway and path projects simple, clear, and built to last. From the first call to the final walkthrough, our team focuses on clean craftsmanship, solid base prep, and a layout that fits how you move through your property.

Site Review & Rough Estimate

Call us to discuss your walkway or garden path and share photos, measurements, or a simple sketch. We review traffic flow, grades, drainage, and material options, then provide a rough cost and schedule a site visit if needed within a few business days.

1

Layout, Quote & Scheduling

After the site visit, we fine-tune the path layout, elevations, edging, and base requirements so the walkway looks right and performs through Hudson Valley seasons. We send a formal quote, answer questions clearly, and schedule the work based on weather and site conditions.

2

Build, Finish & Walkthrough

Our crew handles excavation, base preparation, compaction, setting, and clean finish work with the right equipment for minimal disruption. Once the walkway is complete, we walk the project with you, check drainage and fit, and leave the site clean and ready to use.

Walkways & Paths

A well-built walkway does more than connect one area to another. It changes how your property feels and functions every day. At Red Cedar Landscapes, Inc, we design and build walkways and garden paths that make movement easier, improve safety, and add a clean finished look to the landscape. Whether you need a front entry walk, a side yard path, a connection to a patio, or a path through planting beds, we build routes that look right with the home and hold up through Hudson Valley weather.

We have been serving Hyde Park and the greater Hudson Valley since 1987. As a family-owned company with a 28-person team and the right equipment for serious site and hardscape work, we know that a good path starts below the surface. A walkway should not shift, settle, or hold water after one season. That is why we focus on proper layout, grading, base preparation, drainage, and clean installation from start to finish.

What our walkway and path service includes

We build custom walkways and paths for both new landscapes and existing outdoor spaces. Every property is different, so we plan the route around how you actually use the space. Some homeowners want a welcoming front walk that boosts curb appeal. Others need a more practical path that handles daily foot traffic, connects outdoor living areas, or creates safer access around the home.

Our work can include:

  • Front entry walkways
  • Garden paths
  • Side yard access paths
  • Connections between driveways, patios, pools, and outdoor kitchens
  • Stone, paver, and natural-looking hardscape paths
  • Path edging and border details
  • Grading and drainage improvements around the walkway area
  • Integration with landscaping, planting beds, mulch, and lighting

Designed for appearance, safety, and flow

The best walkways feel natural on the property. They guide people where they need to go without awkward turns, steep grades, or muddy low spots. We look at spacing, width, slope, and how the path ties into entrances and outdoor features. If a walkway is too narrow, too steep, or poorly placed, it can become frustrating to use. Our goal is to create a route that feels comfortable, looks balanced, and works in every season.

Safety is a big part of good walkway design. Uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and weak base prep often cause trip hazards over time. We build with long-term performance in mind, so your path stays solid and dependable. This is especially important for main entry walks, high-traffic areas, and paths used by guests, family members, or property staff.

Material options and style

We build walkways and paths using materials that match the style of the home and the demands of the site. Depending on the look you want, we can create a formal front walk, a relaxed garden path, or a hardscape connection that ties into an existing patio or outdoor living area. Material selection depends on appearance, traffic level, drainage conditions, maintenance goals, and budget.

Common walkway materials may include:

  • Concrete pavers
  • Natural stone
  • Stepping stone paths
  • Crushed stone or compacted path materials for select applications
  • Edging materials that define and contain the path

We help you compare the options and choose a layout and finish that fits your property. If the walkway is part of a larger hardscaping project, we can also coordinate it with patios, retaining walls, planting areas, and other landscape features so the finished space feels unified.

Our installation process

We keep the process straightforward. Most projects start with a phone call. You can share your ideas, measurements, photos, or even a simple sketch of the route you have in mind. We review the information, discuss possible materials and layout options, and provide a rough cost range. If needed, we schedule a site visit to evaluate grades, drainage, access, and the best approach for the install. From there, we prepare a formal quote and schedule the work once approved.

During installation, we focus on the parts that matter most for long-term results. That includes excavation where needed, proper sub-base preparation, compaction, grading, and careful placement of the finish material. We use the right equipment for the job, which helps us work efficiently while protecting surrounding lawn and landscape areas as much as possible. Timing can depend on weather and site conditions, especially when soil is wet or rain affects access and compaction.

Why base prep and drainage matter

Many walkway problems start where you cannot see them. If the base is rushed or the area does not drain correctly, the surface may settle, spread, shift, or collect water. In the Hudson Valley, freeze-thaw cycles can make those issues worse. We take base prep seriously because it is the difference between a path that looks good for a short time and one that stays tight year after year.

We also look at how water moves around the walkway. In some cases, the right fix includes small grading changes or drainage work to protect the path and the surrounding landscape. Our background in landscaping, hardscaping, excavation, and drainage helps us solve those issues the right way instead of simply covering them up.

Walkways that fit the bigger landscape

A path should not feel like an afterthought. It should fit the home, the yard, and the way the property is used. We often build walkways as part of a larger outdoor improvement plan that may include landscape beds, mulch installation, patios, outdoor kitchens, retaining walls, or general site improvements. Because we are a full-service outdoor company, we can look at the whole property and make sure each piece works together.

This gives homeowners a better end result. Instead of a standalone path that feels disconnected, you get a walkway that improves flow, curb appeal, and everyday usability across the property.

Why homeowners choose Red Cedar

Clients across Hyde Park, Columbia County, and the Hudson Valley trust us because we combine hands-on experience with clear communication. Red Cedar Landscapes, Inc has built outdoor spaces for more than four decades, and we still approach every project the same way: show up prepared, give honest expectations, and do the work right. Steve Relyea built this company the old-school way, and that standard still guides how we operate today.

When you hire us for a walkway or path project, you are getting a team that understands both appearance and construction. We do not cut corners on prep, and we do not leave clients guessing about the next step. Our crew takes pride in clean craftsmanship, respectful job sites, and finished work that we are proud to put our name on.

Red Cedar is the only way to go. Phenomenal service, creativity and originality in design coupled with decades of experiential knowledge make this company top-tier. I wouldn’t use anyone else.

Red Cedar took on a job most other companies wouldn't touch — a stone retaining wall with serious drainage issues behind it, plus a drainage system run under the driveway. This wasn't a cosmetic project; it was a real engineering problem, and a few other outfits we talked to either passed on it or clearly didn't have the chops. Red Cedar solved it. The stone wall is solid and beautifully built, the drainage issues behind it and under the driveway are completely resolved, and everything ties together cleanly. Plantings around it were a nice finishing touch. Communication was straightforward, the crew was professional, and they treated the property like it mattered. Five stars — these are the people you call when the job is hard.
