Your front entrance is the first thing anyone sees. And honestly, a plain concrete slab or bare gravel just doesn't cut it when you want a space to feel intentional. This is one of those projects where the details really did all the talking.

We built this pergola using classic mortise and tenon joinery - the same time-tested method used in timber framing for centuries. No metal brackets hidden behind the wood, no shortcuts. The joints fit together cleanly, and the result is a structure that looks solid because it is solid. That kind of craftsmanship shows up in the way the posts and beams sit together, and it's the difference between something that feels permanent and something that feels temporary.

Running alongside the building, the bluestone path is set in a clean gravel bed. Bluestone is a great choice for a walkway like this - it's tough, it drains well, and it has a natural look that pairs well with just about any exterior. Setting the stones in gravel rather than mortar also gives the path a bit of flexibility with ground movement, which matters more than most people think over time.

Pairing the pergola overhead with the path below creates a covered entry experience - shaded, defined, and welcoming. It draws you through the space. That's what good landscape design does. It's not just about making things look nice, it's about making the space actually work for the people using it. We think about how someone moves through an entry, not just how it photographs.

Projects like this come together when the structure and the landscape design are planned as one. The pergola dictates the feel, the path supports it, and the plantings soften the edges. Every piece has a role.
