At Red Cedar Landscapes, Inc, we build retaining walls that do more than hold back soil. A well-built wall helps control slopes, manage drainage, protect your property, and give the space a clean, finished look. In the Hudson Valley, that matters. Our freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, and changing grades can put a lot of stress on a yard. A retaining wall needs to be planned and built the right way from the start.
We’ve been serving homeowners and property managers since 1987, and retaining walls are often a key part of making outdoor spaces work better. Some clients need a wall to stop erosion on a hillside. Others want to create level areas for patios, planting beds, walkways, driveways, or lawn space. In many cases, the wall is both structural and visual. It solves a problem while improving the overall layout of the property.
What retaining walls can help with
Retaining walls are a smart solution when your property has elevation changes or water issues that need to be addressed. We commonly build walls for:
- Slope stabilization and erosion control
- Drainage support and runoff management
- Creating level terraces and usable outdoor space
- Supporting patios, walkways, driveways, and garden beds
- Defining outdoor spaces with a polished, professional finish
- Replacing failing, leaning, or outdated walls
When needed, we also look at the surrounding grade, soil conditions, and water flow so the wall works as part of the full landscape or hardscape plan, not just as a standalone feature.
Our approach
Retaining walls are not a one-size-fits-all project. The right solution depends on the height of the wall, the pressure behind it, drainage conditions, site access, and how you want the finished area to look. That is why we start by learning about the property and the goal of the project. Some clients call us with a clear plan. Others send sketches, ideas, or photos. We review the information, talk through options, provide a rough cost range, and schedule a site visit if needed. After that, we put together a formal quote and a clear plan for the work.
Because we also handle hardscaping, grading, drainage, excavation, and full landscape work, we can look at the bigger picture. If your retaining wall needs to tie into a patio, outdoor living area, planting bed, driveway edge, or drainage fix, we can plan it as one coordinated project.
Built for long-term performance
The strength of a retaining wall comes from what is below and behind it, not just what you see from the front. We focus on proper site preparation, base work, leveling, backfill, and drainage so the wall can perform through Hudson Valley seasons. That may include excavation, compacted base material, drainage stone, and drainage measures to move water away from the wall and reduce pressure buildup.
Good wall construction is about more than appearance. Without the right prep and support, walls can lean, settle, crack, or fail early. We build with long-term function in mind so your wall holds its line, supports the grade, and stays looking sharp over time.
Material and design options
We build retaining walls in styles that match the property and the purpose of the project. Depending on the site and design goals, options may include segmental concrete wall block, natural-looking stone styles, and other hardscape materials that fit the surrounding landscape. Some walls are designed to blend in with planting areas. Others are meant to create a stronger visual edge around a patio, entry, or outdoor living space.
We help clients think through both function and appearance, including:
- Wall height and layout
- Straight, curved, or terraced wall design
- Steps or transitions between grade changes
- Integration with patios, walkways, and landscape beds
- Drainage planning behind and around the wall
- A finish that fits the style of the home and property
Common retaining wall projects
We build retaining walls for a wide range of residential and commercial properties across the Hudson Valley, including estate homes, managed properties, and outdoor spaces that need both structure and curb appeal. Common projects include front yard grade retention, backyard terrace walls, garden walls, support walls near patios, and drainage-related walls where runoff has been causing ongoing problems.
We also replace older walls that are leaning, shifting, rotting, or no longer doing the job. In those cases, we inspect the area, identify the likely cause of failure, and recommend a better long-term solution.
Why clients choose Red Cedar
We are a family-owned company with a 28-person team and more than 40 years of field experience. Our owner, Steve Relyea, built Red Cedar the old-school way: show up, do the work right, and let the results speak for themselves. That standard still drives how we operate today. We use the right equipment, run experienced crews, and communicate clearly from start to finish.
For retaining wall work, that means you get more than labor. You get a team that understands grading, excavation, drainage, hardscape installation, and how to build outdoor features that last. Our fleet of over 30 vehicles and machines allows us to handle site work efficiently and with less guesswork. We come prepared, we respect your property, and we keep the project moving with honest expectations.
What to expect when you work with us
Most retaining wall projects begin with a phone call. You can tell us what you are dealing with, share dimensions, photos, or sketches if you have them, and we will talk through the likely scope. From there, we can provide a rough price range and schedule a visit when needed. After we review the site and confirm the details, we send a formal quote and discuss scheduling. Timing can depend on weather and site conditions, especially when soil is saturated or access is limited, but we always aim to set clear expectations.
Our goal is simple: build a retaining wall that solves the grade issue, supports drainage, improves the property, and looks like it belongs there.
