Dry Creek Bed and Ornamental Grass Installation in Wappingers Falls

A lot of yards in the Hudson Valley deal with the same problem - water runoff that carves up the soil, creates soggy low spots, and leaves you with bare patches that nothing wants to grow in. The fix isn't always a pipe or a catch basin. Sometimes the right answer is working with the land itself.

That's exactly what we did here. We cut in a dry creek bed running through the slope, set natural fieldstone boulders and gravel along the channel, and planted ornamental grasses throughout the surrounding area. The gravel and stone direct water flow during heavy rain. The grasses hold the soil in place and fill in the space as they establish.

The ornamental grass selection here is doing a lot of work. You've got upright clumping varieties mixed with fine-textured low growers - different heights, different textures. Once they fill out, this goes from bare soil and rock to a layered naturalistic planting that looks like it belongs there. No irrigation needed, minimal maintenance once established.

What we want people to understand about a project like this is that it's not just decorative. The dry creek is a functional drainage solution. Water that used to sheet across bare ground now has a path. The boulders slow it down. The gravel moves it through. The plants stabilize everything around it. Form and function, same install.

Fall is actually a strong time to put ornamental grasses and naturalistic plantings in the ground in the Wappingers Falls area. The soil is still warm, roots have time to settle before winter, and the plants come back strong in spring. This one is going to look completely different - in the best way - by next summer.
